West Africa
The Mali Empire was a powerful West African state founded by Sundiata Keita after his victory at the Battle of Kirina around 1235 CE. Originating from the Malinke people in the upper Niger region, Mali grew by controlling key trade routes and gold resources.
Under Mansa Musa (1312–1337), the empire reached its peak, gaining global fame for its immense wealth and cultural achievements. His pilgrimage to Mecca showcased Mali's prosperity, while cities like Timbuktu flourished as a hub of Islamic learning and trade.
Mali's influence declined in the 15th century due to internal conflicts and the rise of rival powers like the Songhai Empire.
