Roman Empire
The Roman Empire was one of the most influential civilizations in history, originating from the Roman Republic. It was established in 27 BCE when Augustus (formerly Octavian) became the first emperor, marking the end of the Republic and the beginning of imperial rule. Around 117 CE, the empire encompassed vast territories across Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East, becoming the most extensive political and social structure in western civilization.
The empire was renowned for its sophisticated infrastructure, including roads, aqueducts, and monumental architecture, as well as its legal system, which has influenced many modern legal codes. In 285 CE, Emperor Diocletian divided the empire into Western and Eastern halves to improve administrative efficiency. The Western Roman Empire faced increasing internal strife and external pressures, leading to its fall in 476 CE when the last emperor, Romulus Augustulus, was deposed. The Eastern Roman Empire, known as the Byzantine Empire, continued to thrive until the fall of Constantinople in 1453.
