Native American
The Tlingit are Indigenous peoples of the Pacific Northwest Coast, primarily residing in south eastern Alaska, with communities extending into British Columbia and the Yukon in Canada. They are part of the northernmost group of the Northwest Coast culture area. Traditionally, the Tlingit maintained a complex hunter-gatherer society, relying heavily on fishing, especially salmon, as well as hunting and gathering. Their social structure was matrilineal, with property and clan identity passed through the mother's line.
In the late 18th century, the Tlingit encountered Russian colonizers. Notably, in 1802, they captured the Russian settlement of New Archangel (present-day Sitka). Their warriors utilized wooden armour and weapons, which proved effective against Russian firearms. Today, the Tlingit continue to preserve their rich cultural heritage, including their language, art, and traditions, while also participating in modern society.
