Sioux Nation

The Sioux Nation, or Oceti Sakowin ("Seven Council Fires"), is made up of three groups: Dakota, Nakota, and Lakota. Traditionally spread across the Great Plains, they lived nomadic lives cantered on buffalo hunting and became expert horsemen after the 18th century. Their society was deeply spiritual, with ceremonies like the Sun Dance and a strong clan-based structure. The 19th century brought conflict with the U.S. over broken treaties and land encroachment, especially after gold was found in the Black Hills. In the present day, Sioux communities continue to fight for sovereignty and cultural survival.
