Native American
The Kanien'kehàka ("People of the Flint"), are the easternmost nation of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy. In Québec, they are among the most populous Indigenous nations, with communities in Kahnawake, Akwesasne, and Kanesatake. Kanyen'kéha, is a polysynthetic Iroquoian language. While English is widely spoken, efforts continue to revitalize Kanyen'kéha among community members. Akwesasne is a unique Mohawk community straddling the Canada–US border along the St. Lawrence River, with over 13,000 members. In 1990, the Oka Crisis—a 78-day standoff in Kanesatake—highlighted tensions over land rights and Indigenous sovereignty.
