The Comanche, or Nʉmʉnʉʉ ("the people"), are a Native American tribe originally part of the Shoshone. They migrated southward in the 17th century, settling in the Southern Plains. The name "Comanche" is derived from a Ute word meaning "anyone who wants to fight me all the time." ​Renowned for their equestrian skills, the Comanche became dominant in the 18th and 19th centuries, controlling vast territories in present-day Texas, Oklahoma, and New Mexico.

Currently the Comanche Nation is headquartered in Lawton, Oklahoma, with approximately 17,000 enrolled members. They continue to preserve their cultural heritage through events like the Comanche Nation Fair and initiatives aimed at revitalizing the Comanche language.
